BBZ Srl is a spin off of the University of Verona. The main field of operation of the company
is the development of hardware and software tools for medicine and surgery.
The expertise of its founders ranges from the development and certification of surgical robots,
to the interactive simulation of realistic environments on parallel architectures. In addition,
they have attended few courses on robotic and laparoscopic surgery and they have assisted several
interventions, both on pigs and humans. Thanks to this expertise and the tight collaboration with
surgeons, BBZ Srl is developing several systems for the training in the field of laparoscopy,
robotic surgery and endoscopy in general.
Lorenzo Bertelli, co-founder of BBZ Srl, received his Master degree in Computer Science in
2005 from the University of Verona. His expertise covers the design of electronics boards, the
development and programming of embedded devices and the development of software for the
control of robotics arms and platforms. Since 2006 he is a collaborator of the Altair robotics
laboratory of the University of Verona for which he has developed the electronics of several
devices and robot, among others a mobile robot and an industrial robotic arm. From 2010 to
2013 he worked in Surgica Robotica Spa for which he has lead the design of the Surgenius
control boards and the development of the microcontroller firmware.
Francesco Bovo, co-founder of BBZ Srl, received his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2006 from the University of Brescia. From 2005 to 2009 he worked as a research assistant in the Altair robotics laboratory of the University of Verona where he gained a strong experience in the design of robotic mobile platform, robotic arms and haptic devices. From 2010 to 2013 he worked in Surgica Robotica Spa for which he has been involved in the design and assembly of the mechanics of the Surgenius, an endoscopic surgical robot. He also looked after the certification of the robot which received the CE mark in 2012. Francesco is currently involved in the design and development of the hardware setup of Xron training system.
Davide Zerbato, co-founder and president of BBZ Srl, received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Verona in 2010 with a thesis on the physics simulation of frictional contact between deformable bodies. His research ranges from physics simulation of complex environment for interactive applications to parallel computation on graphics processing units and to assistive technologies for surgery planning and execution. Since 2006 he is a research assistant at the Altair robotics laboratory of the University of Verona and has been involved in several EU projects (AccuRobAs, Safros and Isur). In these projects he developed the virtual environments used for planning, training and reasoning. In particular he has lead the development of Xron, a surgical training system for the Da Vinci Robot developed within the Safros project. The intellectual property of this system is now licensed to BBZ Srl. He is currently leading the development of the virtual environment used in BBZ's surgical simulators.
Prof. Paolo Fiorini, partner of BBZ Srl, received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Padova (Italy), the MSEE from the University of California at Irvine (USA), and the Ph.D. in ME from the UCLA (USA). From 1985 to 2000, he was with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, where he worked on telerobotic and teleoperated systems for space exploration. Since 2000 he is an Associate Professor of Control Systems at the School of Sciences of the University of Verona (Italy). He was part of the European projects MEDICATE, XPERO, AccuRobAs, ROSTA, FILOSE, Communication4Control and he coordinated the project SAFROS.
